Introduction

The first chapter of 1 Timothy began with a charge Paul gave to Timothy to set things in order in the churches in Ephesus 1:3-7). False teachers needed to be silenced and corrected. In verses 8-17, Paul 1) identified and confronted an aspect of the error being taught and 2) explained the power and glory of the true gospel. In today’s text 1:18-20), Paul concludes his charge to Timothy, calling him to “fight the good fight.”

The elements of the worship service focus on the theme of spiritual warfare, the reality for the Christian church in every generation.

PREPARATION FOR WORSHIP

Prelude

Call to Worship:     Philippians 1:27-30

Invocation

PROCLAMATION

Hymn 588      A Mighty Fortress is our God

Note: The story is told that Martin Luther, composer of this hymn, once threw an inkwell against a wall, explaining that he was trying to hit Satan. The evil one was very real to Dr. Luther. This hymn reminds us of our formidable foe, but also encourages us with knowledge that a powerful word from Christ “shall fell him.” Confident that “his doom is sure,” we confidently fight the good fight.

Worship through Giving

Hymn 589      Soldiers of Christ, Arise

Note: This classic hymn states the Christian’s duty. Echoing Ephesians 6:10-20, Charles Wesley’s famous him calls us to put on the panoply (full armor) that God provides, to stand firm, and yield no ground in this spiritual conflict. This is the essence of the charge Paul gave to Timothy. We, too, must stand for truth and “win the well-fought day.”

Scripture Reading      Ephesians 6:10-20

Note: The battle for truth is a spiritual battle and must be won by those who rely on spiritual means. The apostle Paul encouraged the Ephesians to “armor up” with the spiritual weaponry that the Lord provides.

Pastoral Prayer

Hymn Insert     Rise Up, O Men of God!

Note: Great things were at stake in Ephesus: the health of the church, the advance of the gospel, and the believers’ own perseverance. These things are at stake in every generation, so we say to the church:

Rise up, O men of God!
The Church for you doth wait,
Her strength unequal to her task;
Rise up, and make her great!

RESPONSE

Hymn 643      For All the Saints

Note: Christians stand in the lineage of faithful generations who “by faith before the world confessed” Jesus as their Lord. We resolve to fight nobly as they did and anticipate the day when praise to the Triune God will come from “earth’s wide bounds.”
