Order of Service, June 9, 2024

This Lord’s Day we continue our examination of the qualifications Paul lists for he office of overseer (pastor). The list contains only one qualification of a vocational nature—everything else addresses character. The vocational qualification is, he must be “able to teach” (v. 2). We will look deeply into this essential requirement for the church’s leaders.

The hymns selected for the service will encourage faithful devotion to the work of proclaiming the truth of the gospel.

Call to Worship:       Galatians 6:6-9

Invocation       Pastor Hamilton

Hymn 44 (tune LYONS, 46)      Ye Servants of God, Your Master Proclaim

Note: This anthem summons us to participate in a joyous mission, “Ye servants of God, your Master proclaim, And publish abroad His wonderful name.” The role of the church, led by men of God, is to protect and proclaim the message of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

Worship through Giving
Congregational Response:       Doxology

Hymn (Insert)       Priest and Victim

Note: This hymn beautifully declares the work of Christ from his death to his ascent to his eternal throne. Jesus Christ is the subject of every line. We worship and adore him for who he is and what he has done and will do. This is the message we proclaim and protect.

Scripture Reading      John 21:15-19

Note: Several days following the resurrection, Jesus met with his disciples on the shore of the Sea of Galilee. We read of a loving confrontation that occurred there. Three times Jesus asked Peter, “Do you love me?” The exchange is instructive for us. The point of connection with our sermon is Jesus’ repeated words, “feed my sheep.”

Pastoral Prayer

Hymn 403      I’m Not Ashamed

Note: We declare our resolve to uphold the truth of God’s Word and gospel of His Son, Jesus in the face of opposition.

I’m not ashamed to own my Lord,
Or to defend His cause;
Maintain the honor of His Word,
The glory of His cross.

Message: Timothy’s Charge, Part 1—Confront False Teachers
Text: 1 Timothy 1:3-7
Pastor Steven Thomas

Hymn 643      For All the Saints

Note: Christians stand in the lineage of faithful generations who “by faith before the world confessed” Jesus as their Lord. We resolve to fight nobly as they did and anticipate the day when praise to the Triune God will come from “earth’s wide bounds.”

Prayer Response:      Eric Hicks, Jr.
