Introduction

The 27th article of the Baptist Confession of Faith focuses on “The Communion of the Saints.” In it, “communion” is not a reference to the Lord’s Table. It speaks of the spiritual union that exists between true believers. It is a union that exists between us because we are all united with Christ. The sermon and the other elements of the service will explore this essential doctrine of union with Christ.

PREPARATION FOR WORSHIP

Prelude

Call to Worship       Psalm 133:1-3

Invocation

PROCLAMATION

Hymn 2       Praise, My Soul, the King of Heaven

Note: We begin the service with an anthem that offers praise to the King of Heaven. As we greet him with adoring worship, we remember the grace he extends to us as our Father:

Father-like, He tends and spares us;
Well our feeble frame He knows,
In His hands He gently bears us,
Rescues us from all our foes.
Alleluia! Alleluia!
Widely as His mercy flows!

Worship through Giving

Hymn 222       Church of God, Beloved and Chosen

Notes: The church is created by God and for Christ. It is “beloved and chosen” by Him. He sanctifies us by his Spirit and through his word. He will continue this work until we are “wholly” sanctified and presented to Christ, “spotless, glorious and holy,” as “his chosen bride.”

Scripture Reading       1 Corinthians 12:12-27

Pastoral Prayer

Hymn (Insert)       Union with Christ

Notes: God intends the spiritual union that exists between Christ and his people—an inseparable, bond of love. This remarkable hymn extols the wonders of “the bond of sovereign grace between the Lord and his chosen race.”

RESPONSE

Hymn 219       Blest Be the Tie That Binds

Notes:  This hymn acknowledges our union with our brothers and sisters in Christ.  We belong to the community of faith.  Therefore, we love the church and determine to live in a manner that benefits, rather than hinders, God’s people
