Passion Week Services 2022

Christians around the world annually remember the climax of Jesus Christ’s first advent. They refer to the observance with various names: the Passion Week, Holy Week, or Easter Week. It begins with Palm Sunday which marks the day that Jesus entered Jerusalem, presenting himself as the promised King of Israel (Luke 19:29-40). The religious leaders of Jerusalem rejected the King and, instead of honoring him, killed him by nailing him to a cross. We remember that event annually on Good Friday. We call it “Good” Friday because Jesus’ death did not occur as an accident of history, but rather as the unfolding of God’s eternal plan for our salvation. As our representative, Jesus paid the penalty we owe for our rebellion against God (Romans 3:23; 2 Corinthians 5:21). On Sunday morning–the first Easter–the despair caused by rejection and brutal injustice was displaced by the miracle of resurrection. The resurrection of Jesus validated the truthfulness of all that he claimed and promised (Romans 1:1-4). He claimed to be the Son of God who forgives sin for all who trust him. He promised that he will come again to establish a kingdom in which all his followers will enjoy new life such as he received when he rose from the dead (1 John 3:2).
